The Highland Village Museum, or Baile nan Gàidheal in Gaelic, was the location for our Gathering Excursion day. The village is North America’s only living history museum for Gaelic language and culture. The breathtaking 43-acre site features fantastic views of the Bras d’Or Lake, eleven historic buildings, including three frame houses (c1830-1900), a store, a carding mill, a church, a shingle mill, and a forge.
While enjoying our box lunches, we were entertained with Gaelic singing as museum staff and our members joined in ‘waulking’ tweed. (Waulking (in Gaelic luadh) is an age-old method of hand-finishing newly woven tweed to thicken and soften it.) See all the pictures HERE.
