Memorial Day, May 29, 2023, is a federal United States holiday recognizing the commitment of members of America’s military services who lost their lives while defending their country. On this day, the US pauses to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Memorial Day grew out of the American Civil War of 1861 to 1865 which claimed the lives of more than 550,000 people. During those years, many citizens began to place flowers on the graves of the war dead and the day became known as Decoration Day. It was not until 1971 that the last Monday of May was proclaimed by US Congress as an official National Holiday.
